My friend and ex-bandmate Jingle Jared(founder of Jingle Punks) called me to tell me that he needed a music video for a remix he made for Meow Mix. Fast forward to DP Timur Civan and I in the back room at a downtown NYC adoption shelter popping Benadryl like candy and getting cat scratch fever. Fast forward even further to 50+ million views of this insane piece that is the brainchild of many disturbed individuals. #showbiz

When Mekanism CEO Jason Harris asked me to work on a … I said yes before he finished asking. He didn’t need to tell me anymore. The words that followed were even more pleasing to my ears “You can do whatever you want as long as it’s cool”. That was great to hear because trying to explain this video before it was made would have been a fools errand.

Ring Ring. Randy picks up the phone.

JINGLE JARED “I need you to make 27,000 music videos for this project I just pitched to Trulia. Oh yeah, and it’s gonna be starring MC Hammer.”

RANDY “Can I use CG to put his head on a babys body?”

JINGLE JARED “yes”

RANDY “Deal”

FADE TO BLACK

Since my early directing days I’ve had the good fortune to work with master creative director Jason Marks. He’s the kind of guy you listen to not just because he’s a “made guy” in the ad world but because his ideas will always make a piece better. When Jason asked me to direct this piece It was a no brainer. We had lots of fun on this shoot bashing cakes and working with cute canines.

Sometimes you have stupid ideas and they turn out amazing and sometimes you have amazing ideas that turn out stupid. Not sure which one this is but I like it and it was fun to make. This was a campaign for Cheetos on Heavy.com

In 2010 I heard an amazing song by a girl that I grew up with. I met with her and yacked her ear off about wanting to make a live action stop motion music video with some video game references yadda yadda. We shot 17,000 still images over 7 days and then edited it for 3 weeks. I fell in love with her. I convinced her to marry me. We lived happily ever after.

Oh jeez... What started as a ridiculous discussion during band practice ended with this insane music video and a SXSW Special Jury Award. Some ideas are best left along while others are just too insane to pass. Warning: This video explores adult themes ;)

Gabe from Cobra Starship is just so darn charming! Somehow he convinced me to make an in-camera light-painted hyper-lapse lyric video for him. Ok ok maybe I was the one that pitched it to him but mostly because I didn’t have any clue how many sleepless nights of shooting would be ahead of me. It’s a good thing he’s do damn charming.
